A Northern Light in Cyber

General Info

We are two friends who went to the same high school, eventually the same college, from Michigan's Upper Peninsula. We take pride in what we create and tailor to the user's experience, even if that means starting everything from scratch which we have done multiple times. Below is a full breakdown of where we started with this project and where we are now.

Timeline of Events

August 2024 - CS495:Software Engineering at Northern Michigan University

This is where this project first started. It was a simple semester long project where the goal was to create software that was needed by another professor in a different department, along with going through the whole software engineering lifecycle. The project itself was a cybersecurity CTF (Capture the Flag) platform our client could use with his students. The project entailed not only simplicity but focused on flexibility and addressed issues other CTF platforms have, such as static flags. Throughout the semester, we met multiple times with our client. Updating him on what we were up to and if our vision correleated with what he was expecting and everything inbetween.

December 2024 - Final Demo

The final demo was the real test to see if what we were creating was not only doable, but also what our client was looking for. We did have many features that were not working, which is bound to happen in software engineering. Thankfully he was more than blown away with the platform we created and even had this to say to our professor teaching the course.
"I enjoyed Alex and Jordan's demo this morning. The CTF interface they built is very innovative. I haven't encountered any CTF solution matching the speed and per-user flag functionality that Alex and Jordan created. For the hands on CTF-style problems my students typically use, it takes 5-10 minutes to launch a hands-on challenge, and at that point every flag is the same for all users. Alex and Jordan showed me how they could launch a hands-on CTF challenge for a user almost instantly with unique flag values for each user."

May 2025 - Senior Project and Graduation

With both of us taking our Senior Project course, which is our capstone course, we both thought it was a no brainer to continue what we were doing and continue this project. By pushing this project further, we were able to add the features we were not able to add. Not only that, we ended up scrapping everything we had to be able to change the technologies we were using and create a better structure in our codebase.

Summer 2025 - Northern Kyber is Born

After graduation and getting great feedback on our Senior Project, it was once again a no brainer to continue the project. Development for this project started right out of university where everything was scrapped and rebuilt using yet again, new technologies to help amplify and simplify things for us. Northern Kyber started as a simple project just for a semester course during our time at college and has since been expanded beyond that. With NK, we are able to not only use the skills we have been perfecting but also help plenty of students and educators learning about anything and everything information technology.
